Uh, that wasn't really a reply to me, was it? If so, I guess I'm missing my Secret Decoder Ring. Must be a guy thing.

Oh, I was just being a smartass. A joking response about your comment about the typical macho jock fratboy types on message boards. Please don't be offended, I wasn't trying to be mean or anything. Totally tongue in cheek.

Bill Maher recently summed up most of the internet. You can tweet "Good Morning," and within an hour you'll get a couple dozen assholes respond with "oh yeah? Well good freakin morning to YOU, pal!" Then eventually somebody calls somebody "fag." The internet is funny.

I've been a pretty regular reader here since the early 2000's, I guess whenever they started putting GD up. Thankfully over the years this forum has always been pretty straightforward, aside from that creepy anti-semite anti-obama, anti-islam anti-everything guy. I only comment here and there, maybe a few times a month, not every day like the regulars around here. I know most of the names, but I haven't been keeping up much with the drama I've seen lately. Who is Kochman, who and what are the "fake profiles," etc. all that stuff. I would research it but pretty much instantly the thought occurs to me that it would be a giant waste of time. Especially when AMC has on the 80's classics Real Genius and Just One of the Guys on back to back right now.

Well, paired with "ma'am" it would just get you a virtual slap. But the pairing of "boobs" and "man" ... now that's a scary picture! OK, I'll shut up now :-)

edit to include all-important smiley face so you know I'm not mad :-)

Haha yeah the "man" thing was supposed to be like overly sarcastic, sortof something to use instead of :-P I didn't mean man boobs lol.

Damn internets, so much always gets lost in translation. It's like you just said about the edit to include the smiley. One can say something in jest, but if you forget to put the smiley face or the tongue sticking out, it can come off as being angry or something. But it's cool though, I'm glad we both know the other is just joking around.

Like I said, most people probably don't know me around here, though I was once very touched that my name got included one time like a year ago when someone wanted to know the opinions on some topic or other ("best jam at the 17 minute mark in 1969 Dark Stars" or something) from the real GD scholars on the forum (your Cliff's, Light Into Ashes', William Tell's, AltheaRoses, etc). Anyway my point is that you probably don't "know" me but I "know" you (and not in a creepy way, more in an I admire your posts and contributions way), and I find your comments to be insightful and playful and generally cool and whatnot. Like the majority of the regulars on here, who are all pretty respectful (most of the time, anyway) and know a whole lot of useless information about the Grateful Dead (just like myself). That's why I come back here regularly to read up on things, not as much of the things like "fuck you" letters from Bob Menke like you find elsewhere, and more of the in-depth conversations about the music I love.

Anyway, that got us off topic. What was this thread about, anyway? Boobs and blow? HIV and 1979 Grateful Dead? Hell I don't even remember anymore! :-)

Scholar? Me in that company? Thanks, but that definitely proves you don't come around much :-) I'm just in the "knows some useless information" category.

And I should point out that HIV wasn't identified until 1981 (and hit the news around then, I think), but that means that, by definition, it WAS around earlier and infecting folks (long incubation and all) -- so that 1979-ish behavior/assumptions most definitely contributed to ... blah blah argue argue argue ...

Identified in 1981, acknowledged by Ronald Reagan? Oh, maybe what, 1989?

...and you know more than most, and are a scholar in my book. We have a huge GD cover band scene here in St. Louis (2 "competing" bands that play here at least once each weekly), and it always amazed me the lack of basic GD knowledge of so many of their fans, as well as the musicians themselves. I couldn't have the kind of conversations I have here with 99% of those people. They might have some Dick's Picks, but my excited ranting and raving about the new Miller transfer of 10/13/68 or something would just go over their heads.

I used to sortof work for one of the bands (mostly in an "archivist" role, keeping track of setlists, taping shows, other random shit), and got to know many of the revolving door of musicians that came and went over the years. A lot of them really didn't know anything about the earlier GD. I used to give them cd's of stuff like 2/14/68, they'd never even heard that kind of stuff.

For a while Stu Allen was a somewhat permanent member of one of the bands ("The Schwag," whose bass player has been playing with Melvin Seals for a few years now, along with Pete Lavezolli), it was great when he came around because he knew more about the history of the music and got them to do stuff like the 73/74 style post-Eyes jam, stuff like that.
